Miles City Area Press Release Updated: June 27, 2019 (4 months, 1 week ago)

Long days of abundant sunshine and limited rainfall means that grasses, shrubs and even trees are beginning to dry out in the Northern Rockies and Great Plains.

Whether outside for work or play, individuals need to be careful so their actions don’t accidentally spark a wildfire. Something as simple as driving or parking a vehicle with a hot muffler in high, dry grass can start a fire. So can the use of powered equipment without a proper spark arrester. Use established fire rings or grills and make sure your campfire or charcoal briquettes are put dead out. Smoking should be restricted to open areas such as pavement or dirt. Fireworks are prohibited on State and Federal lands. Check with your local city and county for information on their policy for fireworks and campfires/burn barrels. Always check information boards at campgrounds and trail heads and agency websites for policies within that recreational area.

Remember, One Less Spark means One Less Wildfire!

Fuel conditions are getting dryer and it only takes one spark to start a wildfire. Ranchers, farmers, and recreationists are reminded to help prevent wildfires. • Stay on designated roads and trails on public lands • Avoid driving and parking in dry grass and sagebrush • Check for loose trailer chains and any items that could drag causing a spark • Ensure spark arrestors are working properly on off-road vehicles and chainsaws • Check and maintain your vehicles and equipment • Keep equipment clean from the build-up of chaff and dust • Never leave a campfire or burn barrel unattended • Extinguish fires until cold to the touch

Make certain you have plenty of water, a fire extinguisher and shovel with you. If a fire starts call 911 immediately, since fire resources may be traveling along distance to get on scene.
